Conveniently for Pakistan, Ramadan has arrived coincident to the global coronavirus pandemic. Normally what would be a run up at local grocery stores has instead become a run up of long sleeved blouses. Why? In a fundraiser with the Prime Minister, Pakistani cleric Maulana Tariq Jameel cited “immodesty of women,” more specifically women donning short sleeved blouses, for the spread of coronavirus. Instead of looking in the mirror at the person who seeded the country’s epidemic through his 100,000 person gathering in March, he deflected blame to the easiest prey – women. Local misogynist Abdul Asaad discusses his view of the shortage, “Long sleeve blouses are now in short supply but luckily, I don’t let my wife go out anyway so it’s not an issue in my family.”
