A student group at Berkeley Law called Law Students for Justice in Palestine created a bylaw that banned supporters of “Zionism” from speaking at the group’s events. Though the Jewish, Zionist dean of the law school disagreed with this approach, he validated the group’s right to choose or ban speakers based on their “viewpoint,” which in this case is supposedly anti-Zionist, not “racist.”
Nine other student groups joined in the ban, including the Queer Cactus, Womxn of Color Collective, as well as the Minority Engineering Program. This confusing collection of groups bonded on this topic and subsequently grew a longer list of banned speakers. For example, Queer Cactus will now ban clean cut heterosexuals from speaking at their events. Womxn of Color will now ban Women of Color as well as Womxn without Color. The Minority Engineering Program will ban Majority Language Art graduates from speaking. The Aerospace Engineering Association will ban Nautical Engineers. The AI Organization will ban all humans. The reciprocal speaker banning grew so quickly that now no speakers will be permitted on campus. Go Bears, or those identifying as such.
